Difference between soundproofing and sound absorption

The terms soundproofing and acoustics are frequently mixed up. When people say that a building meets acoustic requirements, they usually mean that the space is adequately soundproofed. Soundproofing prevents sound from being transmitted from one room to another. Concrete and masonry are primarily used for this purpose. A double wall construction can also help.

On the one hand, sound is converted into heat; on the other, it is sent back into the room.
